The definition of gentleman is so frictioned-up. The films have set up some of the most fairytale standards of ‘what a girl expects a gentleman to be’? But in reality, girls expect everything other than that. What should a gentleman be like? What do we expect?

A guy should open doors for a girl (x)

A guy should pay for the bills (x)

A guy should pull a girl’s chair to let her sit (x)

GUYS SHOULD RESPECT, KNOW BOUNDARIES, GIVE SPACE, AND BE POLITE TO GIRLS (YES)

If someone thinks they need to protect us, drive us, give us their coats, then they should know that ‘a gentleman’ means everything beyond these things. These all are secondary things. Here’s what we really expect:

Living in the 21st century, we want you to respect us. Saying “after you ma'am” or “ladies first” is not exactly a move of respect, when in reality its meaning is far different from that. Saying it in a very polite way, we want you to understand that we are now capable enough to do our chores. We don't want people opening doors for us. We don't want people paying for us. We want someone to be very modest about our thoughts and very respectful towards our goals. Men should acknowledge our goals as ‘dreams of normal human beings' rather than saying "you sure you want to do that being a girl." We want people to enjoy our company rather than being too confused thinking about ‘how to impress her?’ Men should care about us but not cross the boundaries. One should be considerate and polite towards women but should at least have their own opinions. Courtesy is more important to us than courage. We want all the men around us to know the difference between 'treating her nicely' and being in a limit while doing so. Only then would a man be considered a gentleman.

Not every man in a tie and a suit is a gentleman. Not every gentleman wears a tie and a suit. It's up to you and your character to define the real gentleman in you.
